How Does the Montana Payroll Calculator Work?

If you are working legally in the Treasure State, your employer should withhold FICA and federal income taxes from your paychecks. FICA taxes are the taxes you pay for Medicare and Social Security, which you would need in the future once you have retired.

You pay 1.45% of your earnings to the Medicare tax and 6.2% to the Social Security tax; your employer matches it. However, if you are self-employed, you would pay the complete 2.9% Medicare tax and 12.4% Social Security tax by yourself, though you may claim a deduction of half of that amount paid.

Additionally, certain earnings are also charged under the Additional Medicare Tax. For single filers, heads of household, and qualifying widows (ers), wages over $200,000 are charged an extra 0.9% for Medicare surtax, which your employer does not match.
